Moharani Coffee House
Houston, TX
Moharani Coffee House is a coffee shop that celebrates the culture of Bangladesh, pairing specialty coffee with a taste of tradition and community. The interior is a contemporary homage to the country's architectural heritage, drawing on the Ahsan Manzil in Dhaka for its rich color, grand arches and detailing reminiscent of Mughal-era palaces. Bold structural forms nod to Bangladesh's Brutalist architecture, softened by hand-woven rattan, cane and jute that honor the region's artisanal crafts. Cozy seating nooks invite guests to study, meet a friend or linger over a book. The result is a cultural hub where every corner tells a story of tradition reimagined for today.
The plan was shaped around how people use a neighborhood coffee shop over a whole day. Counter service anchors the room with the espresso machine, the register and a built-in pastry case, and a grab-and-go area keeps quick visits moving. Beyond the counter, seating is planned for both company and focus: a lounge set into arched niches draws in groups, a custom curved banquette doubles as a workspace, and reading nooks with Mughal-inspired panel walls and Islamic arches offer quieter corners.
Color and material choices come from the natural landscape and national elements of Bangladesh. A lime wash accent wall and antique mirror tile frame the bar, and dark wood trim and crown molding add warmth throughout. The restrooms carry the story all the way through, one with a red wainscot and an oval mirror, the other with green tile and a wavy mirror. Bangladeshi paintings under picture lights and a painted lotus in the storefront window turn the walls into a quiet introduction to the culture.
